Atlantis Dunes, Cape Town, South Africa.
2 August 2014
Weather was cloudy and cold...
We visited Atlantis Dunes today as a follow-up with 2 guys we had on 4x4 driver training 2 weeks ago. We do this as part of every training course we do, free of charge to them. Just to build their confidence and to have a little fun.
It started out as a cold windy day in the Dunes, and it stayed that way until we left. Some sunshine managed to force its way through the clouds just around about lunch time, but it didnt manage to heat things up at all. We had to make our own heat!! We let the newbies drive on hard tyres for a while, as usual, to let them understand the importance of tyre pressures, traction and flotation. Altis (Land Cruiser 100 Series) and I (Jeep Wrangler) know this stuff already, and seeing as we got to the meeting place first we deflated to 0.almost nothing... No struggles for us then...
It started off with some very nervous newbies, both in Fortuner 3.0 D4D Manual vehicles, on fairly hard tyres. This meant lots of getting stuck on dune faces, and lots of reversing. As we went along we had them deflate more and more until they became almost unstoppable. Although the sand was quite firm from all the rain, it was still tricky to drive in some places.
The guys had a lot of fun, and as the day progressed the confidence built up and by the time we got to the "Bathtub" they were going at it hammer and tongs. Shortly after that we decided to call it a day, and back in the parking lot there was much pumping of tyres and shaking of hands. We said our good byes, and all agreed that it was a very successful day, and that we are looking forward to many more of the same.
